Validity of German driving licences in Hong Kong

Drivers residing in Hong Kong longer than 6 months must apply for a Hong Kong driving license at the Transport Department. The Consulate General provides translation services for driving licenses issued in Germany, which may be transferred to Hong Kong driving licenses at the Transport Department. You may apply for the translation any time during our opening hours; it will be processed within 3 working days. Please provide the original driving license and cash (approx. 180 HKD depending on the exchange rate).

Loss of driving licence / International driving licence

If you have lost your German driving licence or wish to apply for an international driving licence please contact the driving licence office at your last place of residence in Germany. You can apply for a new one by sending an informal letter and enclosing 2 passport photographs. The Consulate General is unable to issue driving licences or replacement papers.

Validity of Hong Kong driving licences in Germany
As long as you have not established permanent residence in Germany you can use your Hong Kong driving licence for the vehicle classes mentioned in the document. Please carry your passport or ID-card with you as there is no photograph on the Hong Kong driving licence. It is presumed that after 180 days permanent residence is established. A German driving licence has to be applied for within 6 months of establishing permanent residence in Germany. In order to get the German driving licence you would usually have to pass a theoretical and a practical test.
